Porcelain Veneers VS Crowns
What are they and what is the difference?
Why do I need them and which one is the one for me?
What are they made from, how long do they last and how do I take care of them?
Those are just some questions that pop into our heads when our dentist recommends us to get a porcelain veneer or a crown. We are here to break it down for you!
What are they and what is the difference?
Both veneers and crowns fall under dental restoration and it is all about getting the smile you want and deserve. These treatments are designed to enhance and restore the aesthetic of natural teeth.
They both achieve exceptional results but are two completely different treatments with very different applications.
The most basic answer is:
A Crown encases the entire tooth.
A Porcelain Veneer covers the front surface of a tooth.
Going more in-depth, a crown is much thicker than veneers and requires significantly more trimming of the tooth than veneers. The crown is cemented onto the trimmed tooth and becomes the new outer surface serving the dual purpose of both protection of weak or damaged tooth and giving an aesthetic appearance. While veneers are considered a more conservative pathway for compromised smile as majority of the original tooth is left untouched.
Why do I need them and which one is the one for me?
Both crowns and veneers help to improve the appearance of your smile, the right one for you depends on the amount of your natural tooth structure that needs to be replaced.
If your tooth is healthy with a slight discoloration or require a minor change of shape or size, veneers will be better and less invasive. If your tooth is chipped, cracked, has had root canal treatment done, or needs structural support due to decay, then a crown will be better for you.
What are they made from, how long do they last and how do I take care of them?
Both crowns and veneers are made from dental porcelain and are custom sculpted and shade matched to your natural tooth. The dental porcelain is shaped to perfection to restore the smile by a professional dental technician. We guarantee all our crowns and veneers are 100% made in Australia.
Regular brushing and flossing are advised to maintain their longevity. With regular professional checkups and cleaning, veneers and crowns should last between 10 – 15 years before they need replacing.
